All lubricants for your car  - buy at ATO24!

For reliable, safe and low-wear operation, the right lubricants and operating fluids are essential for a car, be it a passenger car or commercial vehicle. Lubricants and operating materials are mainly classified as liquids, such as oils and coolants, as well as more solid substances such as greases. The wear protection and performance development of a vehicle are subject to several different properties of these substances. An essential function of oil or grease is obvious: the lubrication of vehicle components such as engine, transmission, steering and chassis. This contributes to achieving the desired performance and protects the vehicle from wear and tear. Another, but equally important, function quickly fades into the background: cooling the components. Especially in the engine and transmission, the cooling function of the oil is existential, alongside the coolant in the vehicle's water circuit! Operating fluids such as brake fluid or hydraulic fluids play a key role in the safety of a vehicle. These are also exposed to high thermal and physical loads, which is why consistent performance is important. ATO24 is your competent partner from refilling the engine oil to the complete engine, coolant or transmission oil change. In the ATO24 online shop you can get high quality engine oils and transmission oils for automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, as well as differential and transfer cases in a large selection of over 30 brands at reasonable prices. The majority of our customers' vehicles have an automatic transmission from ZF Friedrichshafen AG. Also known as ZF Group, ZF Friedrichshafen AG is an internationally operating group in the vehicle drive and chassis industry. The fact that the abbreviation "ZF" stands for "Zahnradfabrik" (gearwheel factory) leads to the correct conclusion that ZF Friedrichshafen, along with various other industrial divisions, has been associated with the transmission manufacturing sector from the very beginning. In 1965, ZF became a pioneer in this young sector of the transmission industry with the first series production of automatic transmissions for European vehicles. The automatic transmission, equipped with three gears, bore the designation "HP", as it still does today. Here, the letter H stands for the use of a hydraulic converter, the P for the use of planetary gear sets, which are characterized by their compact design, among other things. The 3HP transmission was used in vehicle models made by BMW, Peugeot, and Alfa Romeo.

From ZF 3HP oil to ZF 6 HP oil, ZF 8HP oil to ZF 9 HP oil

The ZF 4HP transmission was introduced as a successor at the beginning of the 1980s. With an additional gear, this automatic transmission quickly found its way into various vehicles from BMW (including the BMW E30 3 Series, BMW E28 and E34 5 Series, BMW E28 and E32 7 Series), Jaguar, Land Rover, Peugeot, and Volvo. In 1989, the first automatic transmission in a Porsche, the Tiptronic transmission optionally available in the Porsche 911 Carrera 2 of the 964 series, was also a 4HP transmission. This was also available in the 996 successor model.

With the introduction of the 5HP automatic transmission, the ZF Group broke new ground compared to the previous models. The first electronically controlled automatic transmission behaved "intelligently" during driving and was, for example, able to recognize driving with higher effort by the driving resistance, such as occurs when driving uphill, in order to react to this with a later upshift. 5HP transmissions were installed in the BMW models 3 Series E36, E46, 5 Series E34 and E39, 7 Series E38 and Z4 E85. In addition, 5HP transmissions can be found in Audi's A4 B5, A6 C5, A8 D2, in the VW Passat B5. Porsche was also supplied for the 911 996 Carrera 3.4 and 3.6 and Targa models, as well as Porsche Boxter and Cayman 987.

With a new development of the 6HP automatic transmission, ZF presented in 2001 for the first time an automatic transmission designed for production cars which had gears. At the same time, a considerable weight saving was achieved compared to the predecessor model, as the Lepelletier planetary gear set, which was used for the first time, was able to provide an additional gear while using fewer components overall than in 5HP transmissions. In addition to vehicle models from BMW, Audi and Volkswagen, 6HP automatic transmissions can also be found in vehicles from Ford, Kia, Jaguar and Hyundai, among others.

Another groundbreaking innovation was the introduction of the 8HP transmission in 2009. 7 years after ZF had already "revolutionized" the market with the 6HP automatic transmission in terms of efficiency and power-to-weight ratio, the ZF 8HP is another success. While the fuel efficiency of the first 8HP was increased by 9% compared to the first generation of the 6HP transmission, the 8HP sets the course for mild, full, and plug-in hybrid systems and thus for the combination of combustion engine and electric motor in one vehicle. Due to the wide spread of the different 8HP variants, this automatic transmission is suitable for use in a wide range of performance and load classes. The top models 8HP90 and 8HP95, for example, are designed for a maximum load of 900 Nm (for gasoline vehicles) and 1000 Nm (diesel vehicles).

Of particular interest to us as lubricant experts is the fact that with the 8HP automatic, a ZF transmission is also being installed in large numbers in American vehicles for the first time. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), for example, has its own license to produce ZF 8HP transmissions in its own plant in Indiana, which will then find their way into vehicles such as the Chrysler 300, Dodge Challenger, Charger, Durango, and RAM, as well as Jeep Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and Wrangler.

This also applies to the 9HP automatic transmission, which in 2013, first by Jeep and Land Rover, became the world's first 9-speed automatic transmission in a passenger car. This is an automatic transmission designed for front-wheel and all-wheel drives with transverse drive, which in particular meets the requirement for a particularly compact design required for such applications. In addition to vehicles from Honda, Land Rover and Jaguar, 9HP transmissions are found in particular in passenger cars of the FCA Automobiles brands (Fiat, Jeep, RAM).

Which ZF automatic transmissions are available and in which vehicles can they be found?

The following overview lists the ZF 5HP, 6HP, 8HP and 9HP automatic transmissions that are most widely used today, together with the respective passenger car models in which the transmissions have been installed. In particular, it should be noted that different automatic transmissions were installed in the respective listed vehicle models, depending on the engine and year of production, or that different transmissions are or were optionally available. Our overview is therefore only a guide. It cannot be used to make any valid statements about whether a ZF automatic transmission is installed in your vehicle. However, our support team will be happy to help you find a suitable automatic transmission for your vehicle by e-mail at service@ato24.de or by phone at +495203 290.

CHANGE ZF 8HP TRANSMISSION FLUID? MY AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION IS MAINTENANCE FREE, ISN'T IT?

Often today, vehicle manufacturers advertise their automatic transmissions as "maintenance free." In most cases, this means that when the transmission is manufactured, a so-called lifetime fill of automatic transmission fluid and a corresponding oil filter is applied, which is then to be used for the life of the automatic transmission. Some manufacturers limit this lifetime to a theoretical value of 100,000 kilometers or more, while others do not provide any information on this, so that the conclusion is obvious that the automatic transmission oil never needs to be changed on these vehicles.
This statement is usually contradicted, particularly by transmission manufacturers and vehicle service providers. Just as in the engine oil, considerable impurities are found in the transmission oil after a certain mileage, which are caused by ordinary wear. Leaving the automatic transmission oil in the transmission forever without changing it means at the same time that these impurities will never be effectively removed, which conversely also affects the life of an automatic transmission. If you do not have access to more precise information from your vehicle manufacturer, we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your transmission and ask for a sensible change interval for automatic transmission oil and filter.
